Five things we learned as Manchester United win 5-4 on penalties vs Fiorentina

Manchester United and Fiorentina played out a 1-1 draw in the final game of pre-season at Old Trafford.

After falling behind to an early opener from Simon Sohm, Manchester United responded through an own goal from Robin Gosens.

A flat second half followed as Fiorentina sat back to keep the scoreline 1-1 to force a penalty shootout.

Bruno Fernandes, Matheus Cunha, Diogo Dalot, Amad Diallo and Kobbie Mainoo all scored their penalties as United won the shootout.

Here are five things we learned from the game, with United staying unbeaten throughout pre-season.

Hint at back three for Premier League opener

Ruben Amorim named a strong team to face Fiorentina, and it looked like he dropped a hint as to who would be starting in his back three next week for the Premier League opener against Arsenal.

Leny Yoro, Harry Maguire and Ayden Heaven all started in defence with Altay Bayindir playing between the posts.

For instance, Yoro has started on the right side of centre-back in all three games on the US tour, so it sounds like Amorim has made up his mind regarding that role.

The only possible change we could see is Matthijs de Ligt for Maguire, or Luke Shaw for Heaven.

New signing unveiled

Before kick-off, Benjamin Sesko was unveiled as a new signing at Old Trafford.

Old Trafford welcomed four of the new signings before the game.

Cunha came out of the tunnel first, only to be followed by Diego Leon, Bryan Mbeumo and Sesko.

This gave United fans at Old Trafford plenty of reason to be optimistic about the new season.

Another set piece conceded at Old Trafford

Fiorentina opened the scoring from a corner kick as Simon Sohm hit the back of the net with a half volley.

The Swiss midfielder was left alone at the back post with one of his teammates as United’s defence fell asleep.

It felt like we had returned to the 2024/25 season after conceding early on from a set piece.

Amorim will expect his defence to wake up in time to face Arsenal next week.

Mason Mount has a role to play this season

Many thought the additions of two new number 10s would mean less game time for Mason Mount, who missed a lot of his first two seasons at the club due to injury.

Mount has enjoyed a positive pre-season and will be looking to build on that when the competitive campaign begins.

Against Fiorentina, Mount pressed the Italian side like a dog throughout the game and was regularly seen closing down David de Gea to force the Spaniard to go long with his passes. These methods ensured United were able to win back possession and attack the visitors.

Even if it’s a role to play from the bench, Mount will make more appearances this season if he can stay fit.

United appear more physical

United won countless balls in the air inside Fiorentina’s box and had the physical edge over their opponents.

Yoro and Casemiro had many chances to give United the lead after Gosens’ own goal in the first half.

This was a weakness in the team that was exploited in the Premier League last season.

Only time will tell if they will shape up better against Premier League teams this season.
