Everton already need significant recruitment in the final few weeks of the transfer window.

David Moyes has spoken of his desire to add 10 players to his squad this summer, but he has only been handed five new additions so far.

The Friedkin Group have brought Carlos Alcaraz, Thierno Barry, Mark Travers, Adam Aznou and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall to the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

There is still more work to be done, and the Toffees may need to abandon their plans and go in a different direction after an injury update emerged.

Vitaliy Mykolenko injured v Roma

Everton are facing the Friedkins’ other club, AS Roma, in the final test event at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Saturday (9 August).

MORE TOFFEES STORIES

However, while everything seemed to go to plan in terms of the stadium itself, on the pitch, that was not the case.

Liverpool Echo journalist Joe Thomas shared (9 August) that Vitaliy Mykolenko suffered an injury during the first half, which forced him off, and was replaced by Aznou.

Everton need to enter the market for a Mykolenko replacement

If Mykolenko’s injury is a serious one, the Blues need to enter the market for a new starter, as Aznou does not have enough experience at the top level.

He has only featured 17 times in the senior set-ups at Bayern Munich and Rayo Valladolid, and boasts no knowledge of the Premier League.

Anou’s senior appearances

La Liga: 13 appearances

Bundesliga: Two appearances

Champions League: One appearance

Club World Cup: One appearance

Throwing the 19-year-old into the deep end would be a huge risk, and could destroy his confidence if he is not ready to step up and therefore makes mistakes.

It would be better to try to sign a free agent or loan an experienced option, so that the Toffees still have the budget to spend on their other targets.

There is no excuse to leave Moyes short this season. Blues fans have had to deal with restrictions to their transfers for years under Farhad Moshiri; now the shackles are off, they should make sure there are no weaknesses.

The new ownership has to step up and make sure that the L4 outfit are ready for the new campaign.
