“Very good chance…” - David Ornstein drops huge update on £64m star’s Man Utd future

Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund is seeing his Old Trafford career fade away after a recent arrival at the Theatre of Dreams - and The Athletic journalist David Ornstein believes that despite his wishes to stay and play under Ruben Amorim, there is a 'very good chance' that the Dane will leave in the summer transfer window.

Hojlund moved to Manchester two years ago after impressing at Serie A side Atalanta, and impressed enough in his first campaign with 16 goals in 43 games to be the club's leading striker for the 2024-25 campaign. However, a massively underwhelming season that saw him notch just four Premier League goals in 32 outings has forced United's hand to move to RB Leipzig star Benjamin Sesko - pushing Hojlund down the pecking order.

Ornstein: 'Very High Chance' Rasmus Hojlund Will Exit Man Utd This Summer

The young talent has had interest from elsewhere, but seeing his future at United, he's signalled his intentions to stay - though United would likely wish to receive money for him having spent just under £200million this summer. Ornstein said on The Athletic, via UtdXclsuive:

"We don't have an outcome yet. I think Manchester United would favour a departure, whether it's a sale, a loan, an option or an obligation.

"Rasmus Hojlund has come out very publicly and said that he wants to stay and fight for his place. He even sought out reporters, including our very own Laurie Whitwell on United's USA pre-season tour, to tell them that on the record...

"We'll have to see how he receives the impending arrival of Benjamin Sesko and how United react. Do they tell him it's time to go and make it very clear to him that he's not going to be a part of their plans? Are they able to carry two strikers if he wasn't to leave, financially and in terms of squad space? That's another key question.

"I think they'll be imagining getting some significant money in for a player who does have significant interest. There is a very good chance he moves on before the window shuts, obviously, but I don't know of anything imminently developing right now."

Sesko joins with good pedigree in the Champions League, Bundesliga and on the international stage - though Amorim will still need backup for the Slovenian star.

If Hojlund can prove to be a solid bench option, alongside fellow talisman Joshua Zirkzee acting as backup for Matheus Cunha in the No.10 role, he could still forge a career at Old Trafford.
