The 23-year-old has emerged as a key part of the Rossoneri squad since joining us from Schalke in 2022, going to make 85 appearances for the club since.

Having impressed over pre-season this summer, it had been widely reported that he had established himself in Massimiliano Allegri’s plans for the upcoming campaign, but it seems as though the situation could be about to change.

As reported by [Fabrizio Romano](https://x.com/FabrizioRomano/status/1954156628380446888), negotiations are advancing at pace between Milan and Newcastle, with an offer worth €40m now having been made by the Premier League side.

It’s added that the two clubs are now in the final stages of talks, with the German defensive ace open to the move to Tyneside, and so it doesn’t sound as though agreeing on personal terms which be much of an issue.

In turn, the expectation is that he’s now nearing an exit from Milan, and so the search for his replacement could become a more prominent task for the Rossoneri in the coming days.

On one hand, it seems a shame to lose the talented defender given he has been an important option for us thus far, and at just 23 years of age, he still has a big portion of his career ahead of him where he’ll continue to improve, develop and mature into a top player.

That said, €40m is a significant bid, and that will likely prove to be more than enough to give Allegri and sporting director Igli Tare additional financial flexibility this summer to continue to bring in reinforcements, and ones that suit the Italian tactician’s system and style of play more effectively.

Time will tell if there are any official updates in the coming days or not, but that feels like an offer that Milan are not going to turn down as they may well have been holding out for a bid that matches or exceeds his market value, and hopefully despite the new Serie A season rapidly approaching, we’ll be left with enough time to bring in a new option to fill that void, and ensure that we have enough competition and depth in the heart of our defence for this season to compete at the top level.
