Sheffield Wednesday are desperate for reinforcements after a chaotic summer behind the scenes
Manchester United academy prospects Harry Amass and Toby Collyer have both emerged as key targets for Sheffield Wednesday ahead of the new Championship season.
Amass, 18, made a name for himself at Watford’s academy before moving to Carrington in March 2023 amid strong competition from a number of top Premier League sides at the time. Meanwhile, Collyer, 21, has been on the books at United since March 2022 after being recruited from the academy at Brighton & Hove Albion. Both players have featured for England at youth level and played sporadically for the Red Devils throughout last season as Ruben Amorim tried to look for solutions in what was ultimately a disastrous end to last season for the Old Trafford club.
Sheffield Wednesday desperately need new signings
Sheffield Wednesday finished in a respectable 12th place position last season under Danny Rohl but are expected to find things much more difficult next season due to a turbulent summer off the pitch. Rohl is no longer in the dugout at Hillsborough Stadium and the club now have his assistant Henrik Pedersen leading the team instead despite having no prior experience in English football.
Wednesday have been under transfer embargo for most of the summer and have seen the likes of Josh Windass and Michael Smith among others leave the club on free transfers due to missed wages. The Owls managed to get their EFL embargo lifted on Friday night after finally paying the money that was owed to players and other clubs, and now they’ll be hoping that they can rely on clubs further up the English pyramid to do them a favour or two as they look to flesh out their threadbare squad and at the bare minimum assemble a group that can compete to survive in the Championship.
The Sheffield Star understands Harry Amass and Toby Collyer are both loan targets this summer. The club are currently only able to make loan moves which have no permanent fee involved due to their financial predicament. Both would be assured of regular first team opportunities and a chance to harness their potential before eventually returning to United if a deal was to materialize.
What next for Harry Amass and Toby Collyer?
Harry Amass was left out of the club's recent trip to the United States as a decision had already been taken for the 18-year-old to go out on loan. He played seven times across last season as a left-back but is expected to drop down the pecking order now that Luke Shaw has returned to fitness.
Toby Collyer played 13 times across last season and had shown promise in the middle of the park but is also expected to find first team opportunities restricted after a flurry of new arrivals. Both need gametime to live up to their potential and are assured minutes if they move to South Yorkshire due to the lack of depth in Sheffield Wednesday’s team. However, their availability could also alert several other sides in the division as well.
“The end goal for me is to play as many minutes as possible here, hopefully starting every week," Collyer said.
"I'll sit down with the manager and higher-ups and see what's the best solution for that and the best way for me to develop, whether it's stay here or go on loan."
