Mike Tomlin hints Aaron Rodgers might sit out the entire preseason

Will Aaron Rodgers end up playing in the preseason? Head coach Mike Tomlin admits Rodgers might not play at all, and his first game in a Pittsburgh Steelers uniform could be their matchup against the New York Jets.

In an interview with Bob Labriola of Steelers.com, Tomlin did not commit to playing Rodgers in any of the three preseason games. He has already ruled Rodgers out of Saturday’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

“You might be looking at one in 2025. Hey, this guy has been doing this for 21 years. His cumulative snap total and what’s required for him to be ready is different than others. And so if I’m not adaptable and open to adjustments relative to the needs of our guys, then I’m not doing my job. And so you might be looking at one of those coaches in 2025,” Tomlin said.

The team have become impressed with Rodgers’ accuracy. Tight Pat Freiermuth believes Rodgers has been pinpoint recently.

“His ball placement is great, and he always throws us open,” Freiermuth said. “If we’re covered at a certain angle, he throws it back shoulders or throws us over the top.”

That is one trait Rodgers has kept throughout his career, and part of the reason he is a Pro Football Hall of Famer whenever he calls it a career.

The Steelers hope he can keep that for one more season, and in recent days, the team has started to see the Rodgers they think was there in the second half of the 2024 season, and not playing him in the preseason could be part of that strategy.
