Report: Newcastle want to sign award-winning £25m midfield star for Howe, he’s been compared to …

Newcastle United are considering a move for Ajax midfielder Kenneth Taylor, who could be signed for “a fee in the region of £25m,” according to NUFC Blog.

The 2024/25 season was a memorable one for Newcastle, who won their first English trophy in 70 years by beating Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final. It was a campaign made even better when, on the final day of the Premier League season, Eddie Howe’s team secured Champions League football for the second time in three years.

Despite a strong season, it has been a horrible transfer window for the Magpies thus far. Newcastle remain in the market for signings, with Benjamin Sesko the latest target they have missed out on. The club have also tried, and failed, to sign the likes of James Trafford, Joao Pedro, Hugo Ekitike and Bryan Mbeumo this summer, amongst others.

To make matters worse for Newcastle, star striker Alexander Isak wants to depart the club, with Liverpool reportedly the forward’s preferred destination. This is an issue Newcastle must address in the market, but it now seems that the club are looking into a move that would bolster their midfield ranks.

Taylor on Newcastle’s Radar

Kenneth Taylor in action for Ajax

Midfield is an area of the pitch that Newcastle need to reinforce, particularly after the sale of Sean Longstaff to Leeds United. Joe Willock has struggled, both for form and with injuries, in recent seasons, whilst youngster Lewis Miley did not receive many minutes across the 2024/25 campaign.

Though Miley could now feature more, it is no surprise that the Magpies are looking to offer more depth to their midfield. As per NUFC Blog, Newcastle have added Kenneth Taylor to their shortlist of midfielders, with manager Howe “determined” to recruit at least one more option.

Now 23 years old, Taylor has spent his entire senior career to date with Ajax, becoming a key part of their midfield since debuting in 2020. Particularly under Francesco Farioli’s guidance last season, Taylor showcased his keen eye for goal, netting 15 times across all competitions and being named as the club's player of the year.

Taylor “could be available” for around £25 million, a fee that Newcastle could certainly afford. Left-footed, Taylor, who has been compared to Toni Kroos for his style of play, would offer Howe a style of play that differs from his current options. Extra goals from midfield would always be appreciated, but perhaps especially so if Newcastle lose star striker Isak.
