Newcastle United have released a statement following the 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid at St James’ Park on Saturday.
It has now been confirmed that the Magpies have failed to win any of their pre-season games following Friday’s draw against Espanyol. Fans will admit that morale is low on Tyneside, and the hope was that Eddie Howe’s side could pick up a win on home soil against a top La Liga side, but that was not the case.
Newcastle United were well beaten by Atletico Madrid, who played into the Magpies’ fast, attacking style of football to catch them out on the counter and strike without issue.
The game finished 2-0, with former Manchester City man Julian Alvarez and Antoine Griezmann scoring in the second half to confirm that Newcastle had lost the Sela Cup for the first time in its three-year history.
Elsewhere, Anthony Gordon was taken off injured late in the game. Howe confirmed that it is an issue with his ankle, but not one he believes will be too bad.
While the result was one thing, another issue caused Newcastle to make an official apology on social media.

Newcastle United apologise for issues during the Atletico Madrid stream
All of Newcastle’s pre-season games have been livestreamed on the club’s website without any issue. However, for viewers away from St James’ Park, the stream cut out around 50 minutes in, coincidentally just before Atletico’s first goal.
The stream got going again towards the end of the game, but all the action, including both goals, had been missed.

Following the defeat, Newcastle were forced to put out a statement regarding the livestream issues on social media.
A statement, written by the club, said: “We apologise for the technical issues with today’s live stream. Those affected will be refunded the value of the match.”
Thankfully, fans will not have to pay for the livestreams again until next pre-season.
When are Newcastle United next on television after Atletico Madrid defeat
The Magpies’ pre-season is over, fans will be keen to see the back end of it after the run of disastrous results.
Thankfully, the 2025/26 Premier League season is starting, and Newcastle will be one of the first teams in action on the opening weekend.
Newcastle travel to Aston Villa for the early kick-off on Saturday. Howe will be keen to avenge the 4-1 defeat his side suffered at Villa Park near the end of last season.
Then comes the first home game against Liverpool, which should have a memorable atmosphere.
