West Ham could soon find out that the financial gain of selling Lucas Paqueta is more useful than his performances on the pitch.

Paqueta has been a staple in the Hammer’s midfield in recent years, which has garnered attention from neighbouring clubs.

Manchester City hold a long-standing interest in the Brazilian. While City saw a £70million plus add-ons bid rejected for him in 2023, Pep Guardiola’s side returned to the charge this summer.

However, Man City are not at the table alone. After a series of rejections, Newcastle are on the hunt for their marquee signing. While the Hammers would be disappointed to see Paqueta leave, the financial gain from his sale would make for a nice parting gift.

West Ham would save more than £15million from Paqueta sale

As reported by the iPaper on Friday (8 August), Paqueta is a target for Newcastle and is “well-liked” at St James’ Park.

The initial reaction to this from West Ham would be to retain their player. After all, Paqueta has demonstrated once again why he is such an important piece of Graham Potter’s puzzle.

However, the financial incentive for his departure may be greater than the rewards from his labour. According to Capology (9 August), the Brazilian earns £150,000 per week.

West Ham are reluctant to let Paqueta leave despite reported interest from City and Newcastle

The Hammers could pocket a decent fee if they sell

The player’s desire could have an impact on a potential transfer

He is the top earner at the club and is set to make £15.6million at the London Stadium between now and 2027. Meanwhile, it has been reported that West Ham want around £50-60m to sell Paqueta.

If the Hammers agree to a sale, they could pocket his wages as well as any fee from his transfer.

This would be perfect for West Ham to splash on some last-minute signings this summer.

And after the huge bid that Newcastle bid for Benjamin Sesko and their willingness to break the club record to sign Hugo Ekitike, the Hammers could accumulate a large fee from Paqueta’s exit.

West Ham will miss Paqueta’s skills if he leaves

Paqueta should be allowed to decide his future

West Ham should sell Paqueta this summer only if the Brazilian expresses a desire to leave.

He is one of Potter’s most important players, and forcing him to leave would be unnecessary. However, retaining a player who does not want to play for the badge would also be a huge mistake.

Therefore, if Paqueta wants to leave, let him. If not, then the Hammers will be stepping into the new season with one of their best players.
