'We need': Bruno Guimaraes makes honest Newcastle United admission amid Alexander Isak drama

Bruno Guimaraes has taken to social media following Newcastle United’s 2-2 draw with Espanyol at St James’ Park.

The Brazilian played the full 90 minutes as his side fell to a late equaliser from former Middlesbrough player Kike Garcia to keep their run without a win in pre-season going.

Bruno Guimaraes was undoubtedly one of Newcastle United’s best players against Espanyol, dictating the tempo and playing well alongside young midfielder Lewis Miley, who could be in for a promising 2025/26 campaign.

Newcastle’s draw with Espanyol still came with its positives. Aaron Ramsdale saved a penalty, while Matt Targett and Jacob Murphy got on the scoresheet. However, the summer has been marred by controversy surrounding Alexander Isak’s future at Newcastle.

The Swede has not appeared in any of the Magpies’ five pre-season games so far, and is even a doubt for the first Premier League game against Aston Villa next week. Newcastle have suffered due to the speculation surrounding Isak, and Guimaraes is now doing whatever he can to try and drown out the noise.

On social media, Guimaraes has made an honest claim, while subtly addressing what is going on behind the scenes.

Bruno Guimaraes calls for fan support amid Newcastle United’s struggles

This summer has been far from easy for the Magpies. Many major signings were expected after qualification for the Champions League was secured.

Unfortunately, Newcastle have missed out on their top targets and have only been able to make two signings for the first team so far. While Anthony Elanga and Ramsdale are great additions to the club, it is clear that more work needs to be done before the current transfer window can be deemed a success.

The 2025/26 campaign could be the toughest season yet for Howe’s side, with Isak seemingly unwilling to play and the squad far from complete. Guimaraes has now taken to social media to try and calm the nerves and lift spirits.

On Instagram, Guimaraes said: “Happy to be back home. A lot of work ahead. We need your support more than ever for this season full of challenges. Howay the lads.”

Bruno Guimaraes called for transfers at Newcastle United in May

Guimaraes has done a brilliant job as captain of Newcastle, helping the club win their first domestic trophy since 1955 and bringing Champions League football back to St James’ Park for next season. Despite that, even he thought this summer was going to be much better than it has been.

In an interview after securing Champions League football, Guimaraes called for Newcastle to make signings, and had an air of confidence around him that work was going to be done to bring new players to the club.

Speaking on the pitch at St James’ Park following the game against Everton, Guimaraes said: “We have improved a lot, but I think we’re not at the level that I want.

“I think for next season, we are going to need more players to be honest with you, because I think the squad is a little bit short.

“We have seen it last year when we played in the Champions League, we lost some players for injury and then it was busy for us. I think we can improve our level because next year, our season will have one more competition.

“We need to work hard now, have an amazing holiday. We need to improve of course but we’re very, very happy.”
