Arthur Masuaku, who spent seven years in East London, is set to sign with the Black Cats on a free transfer from Turkish side Beşiktaş.
Now 31, Masuaku arrives at the Stadium of Light after a solid campaign in Turkey, where he registered a career best of 10 assists in 46 matches for Beşiktaş last season.
Masuaku originally joined West Ham in 2016 for £6.2m and remained with the Hammers until 2023. He has represented DR Congo with 36 international caps to his name.
During his time in London, he became known for his versatility, operating both as a left back and a left winger. While his defensive contributions were sometimes questioned, his ability to drive forward and create chances made him a valuable asset in attack.
The veteran full back will always have a place in the hearts of many Hammers fans and he was full of emotion when he departed in 2023 “I always felt loved there with you, I wish you guys the very best for the future.”
