Liverpool play Crystal Palace at Wembley on Sunday with another piece of silverware at stake. The Community Shield is widely seen as the season opener before the Premier League season kicks off.
The Reds qualified for the match having won the Premier League title in Arne Slot's maiden season at Anfield, while Crystal Palace upset the odds to beat Manchester City 1-0 in the FA Cup final at the same venue in May. One player to have turned out for both clubs is Nathaniel Clyne.
The fullback departed Liverpool in the summer of 2020 after making 103 appearances over five years for the club following his transfer from Southampton in 2015. Clyne made an impressive start to life on Merseyside, but injuries hindered his time at Liverpool, restricting him to just 10 appearances over his final three campaigns at the club.
But the defender missed out on playing a role in the Reds' Champions League win in 2019 and 2020 Premier League victory under Jurgen Klopp, and previously expressed his disappointment at not having contributed to the Reds' success during his time at Anfield.
"Yeah, I missed out on that," he told The Guardian. "It just makes you more hungry, though.
"To see the team having success just pushed me to get better, and get back as quickly as I could. All credit to Liverpool for what they achieved, and I’m just glad that I was a part of it."
The 34-year-old has since gone on to help Crystal Palace win their first major trophy - last season's FA Cup. Now, Clyne is set to line up against Liverpool in Sunday's Community Shield at Wembley Stadium.
When asked what Klopp taught him, he replied: "Just to keep fighting. You can see he’s hungry for the players to play at 100%.
"That’s what he demands from his players: just to give it all on the pitch. That’s what I’ve learned from him: to play with 100% and to play with confidence as well."
