Wonderkid alert: Real Madrid bidding to complete £61m move for "special player"

Real Madrid are reportedly preparing to activate the €70m (£61m) release clause in Rodrigo Mora's Porto contract.

The 18-year-old had an excellent 2024-25 campaign in Portugal's top flight, scoring 10 goals and registering four assists in 23 appearances, and he is viewed as one of the best young talents in world football.

Mora also scored once in three appearances for Porto at the recent Club World Cup, and he demonstrated his versatility last season by operating in a number of different positions, featuring as a central midfielder, left-sided attacker, right-sided attacker, number 10 and a second striker.

A number of major clubs are believed to be keeping a close eye on the teenager's progress, but Real Madrid are allegedly looking to get the deal done during this summer's transfer window.

According to Fichajes, Los Blancos are prepared to activate the €70m (£61m) release clause in Mora's contract, but they would be willing to let him remain on loan with Porto for another campaign.

The move is seen as beneficial for both clubs, as it would allow Porto to keep their teenage star for another season, while Real Madrid will not have to beat a number of teams to his signature in the summer of 2026.

Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez was recently full of praise for the attacker, who is being tipped to work his way into the senior squad for the 2026 World Cup.

"He is a special player, I would like to talk about his path," Martinez told reporters. "I've seen him play for the U17 team and he made a positive impact. For what he's done in the last six months he deserves a place in the national team.

"He is a different player. At 18, to play in Europe, to play in the domestic league and score 10 goals and set up four more. He is new and we have to help him. I have a smile when I talk about Rodrigo Mora because I think he will mark an era in Portuguese football."

It would be fascinating to see how Mora would fit into a Real Madrid team, but there is a feeling that he will eventually settle into the number 10 spot, with the bulk of his football last season coming in that position.

Mora has also excelled as a wide player, though, starring on both the left and the right, so he could potentially operate in a wide position for Real Madrid, but a lot could change at Bernabeu before the summer of 2026.

For now, Mora will be focusing on another season at Porto, and there is no question that he will be one of the young talents to watch in Europe in 2025-26 considering the level of his performances last term.
