Tottenham look to have come up short with their interest in a seasoned attacker.
Tottenham are on the lookout for more attacking talent as the new season draws near. Spurs are now just days away from their UEFA Super Cup clash with PSG on Wednesday, and just days after that, the new Premier League season will begin.
Thomas Frank has a big job ahead of him to turn Tottenham into a side competing for Europe after a campaign that saw them finish deep in the bottom half, and he must also balance the added challenge of Champions League football.
Tottenham have already found themselves short of attacking options. Heung-min Son has left the club, while Richarlison’s recent injury history adds an extra layer of concern. Mohammed Kudus has been signed, but Tottenham still need another winger and a striker to back-up Dominic Solanke, while an attacking midfielder is another item on Frank’s shopping list after the crushing loss of James Maddison for much of the season through an ACL rupture.
According to a report from Fichajes, Tottenham bid £43.3million to sign Barcelona’s versatile attacker Ferran Torres, but their bid has been knocked back. The report claims Barca have decided to keep hold of Torres, seeing him as a valuable player.
When signing Torres, former Barca boss Xavi said: “He's a player on another level, he's spectacular: how he understands the space, links play, doesn't lose the ball, his defensive work... he's world-class. "He's a great signing, one I wanted, and a wonderful footballer.”
City boss Guardiola said the same of Torres after the forward scored a hat-trick to finish off his season with the Manchester club. He said: “I am delighted for the three goals but he has incredible numbers for first season in England. He didn’t play during a period of two months much. He came as a winger with incredible runs in behind, but he can play as a striker.
“Every time he plays in that position, he has a real sense of goal. The last one is a big example of that, the intuition to know where the ball comes and be there to score. He was fantastic all season. An incredible signing for us, a young player who can play in all three positions for us up front.”
Spurs could have landed an experienced title winner who has a Premier League and La Liga title to his name, but it now looks as though they will miss out. Torres would have been useful because of his versatility and his ability to play across the front line, including in the number 10 if needed, but unless the North London club are willing to offer a price Barca can’t refuse, they are going to have to shop elsewhere.
