Leandro Trossard injury latest after Athletic Club absence

Mikel Arteta has given an update on Leandro Trossard, one of just two Arsenal players remaining absent with an injury ahead of the Premier League opener.

There were plenty of positives to take from Arsenal’s final pre-season friendly against Athletic Club on Saturday, not least the 3-0 result and a first goal for summer striker signing Viktor Gyokeres.

Another boost for the team was the return of Riccardo Calafiori and Kai Havertz after minor pre-season injuries. Calafiori started the match and played the first 45 minutes, whilst Havertz came on with 20 minutes to go and scored the Gunners’ third goal.

Assuming both came through their appearances without issue, Arsenal now only have two injured players – Gabriel Jesus and Leandro Trossard.

Jesus isn’t expected back for at least another couple of months, but Mikel Arteta gave a positive update on Trossard in his post-Athletic Club press conference.

“I think he’s going to be [okay] in a few days, yeah, a little niggle in the groin,” Arteta said. “But he should be fine.”

Arteta had previously suggested Trossard even had a chance to feature in Saturday’s friendly. Though the Belgian ultimately ended up missing out, it doesn’t seem like he’s far off a return.

Arteta gave chances to Gabriel Martinelli and Noni Madueke on the left in Trossard’s absence, both of whom played well in the 3-0 win. Martinelli assisted Bukayo Saka’s goal before coming off at half-time, and Madueke created a couple of good chances and scored in the penalty shootout.

The Arsenal manager will have a decision to make on which player to pick on the left against Manchester United next weekend, with Martinelli probably the favourite right now.
