Cleveland Browns News and Rumors 8/10: A Matter of Perspective

CLEVELAND, OHIO (TheOBR.com) - Good morning, Cleveland Browns fans! Things have settled down a little after Friday night's Cleveland Browns debut, and hopefully, everyone has had a chance to digest what happened. It looks like another beautiful sunny day is in the offing. I love Summer!

THE DAILY BLOVIATION

One of the most striking aspects of the entire Shedeur Sanders saga is the vastly different perspectives held by various groups regarding the young quarterback and his development.

The Browns believe they're doing the right thing by gradually introducing Sanders to the NFL. I think they're earnestly trying to develop Sanders and maximize his chances for success. Going from Colorado to the NFL is a huge jump. The game is much faster, operating an offense is more complex, and the defenses are as well. The "school solution" is to sit him, let him learn, and only trot him out onto the field when the team thinks he's ready to face live bullets from the top defensive players on the planet.

At the same time, Sanders' advocates want to expedite the process and see if he can shine in the NFL right away with first-team reps and a legitimate chance to start from the outset.

After years of watching the Browns rush young quarterbacks onto the field in desperation, I suppose I align more with the current brain trust's approach to grooming quarterbacks. Whether because of injury or impatience, the team has struggled to put it into practice since the moment Tim Couch stepped onto the field in 1999.

But that's all it is, perspective. There's no certain answer. There are no conspiracies to hinder Sanders (or Gabriel, or anyone else). Just a team doing what it thinks is right for the quarterback's development.

Perspective enters into how Sanders is covered in the media. Below is a video of a brief confrontation between Shedeur Sanders and a local media member. The brief moment isn't that hostile, and there's laughter as Sanders knows how futile it is to talk about being "treated nicely" by reporters whose job it is to be objective.

Shedeur Sanders addresses Cleveland-based sports journalist and Browns analyst Tony Grossi, who’s known for being critical and biased toward him.

“You always say negative stuff about me. I didn’t do nothing to you. I’ve never seen you say anything positive about me.”

Again, differing perspectives spring up in reaction to this moment, some of which are set up by the clickbait element of the media.

I thought what I saw was mostly harmless, but the opportunistic aggregation media showed up with their usual over-dramatic headlines:

"Shedeur Sanders Calls Out Browns Reporter",

"Shedeur Sanders Pushes Back on Browns Analyst After Preseason Debut",

"Browns Reporter Who Was Confronted By Shedeur Sanders Breaks Silence",

"Shedeur Sanders confronts reporter after NFL preseason debut vs. Panthers"

At least the above outlets that reported on the brief interaction certainly showed their perspective, which is: "get clicks, make money". The extent to which they inform casual fans is unfortunate.

Unlike many fans who think beat writers have a cushy gig and enjoy cursing their opinions, it's a challenging job that requires a particular mettle. Writers typically receive a high ratio of criticism to pay. In most cases, beat writers have to work hard and take a lot of criticism for whatever they do write. What is interpreted as "attention-getting" in some cases is just honest opinion and criticism. The team has been horrible for 25 years, so it's not unexpected that some writers have a measured view of their prospects. So do some fans.

It requires the nerve to absorb moments like the writer absorbed here, which happen often in locker rooms around the league. It takes some chutzpah to show up and talk to people you might have criticized in a column the day before.

I know I'm not cut out for it. As I've discussed here before, I distanced myself from the "beat writing" aspect of my job 20 years ago because I wasn't very skilled at it. I appreciate those who are.

All these different perspectives seem earnest to me. Some feel that Sanders is getting short-changed because he has been lofted to the front of the line. Some see Sanders' handling as one of the better Browns decisions in recent years. All want the best for the player/team; they see things through a different lens.

Some will see the Sanders/reporter moment as an indication that Sanders is a troublemaker. I see the opposite. To a certain extent, how they perceive the moment is shaped by the media sources they use. Someone who reads this bloviation will get a different impression than someone who scans the headlines I listed above.

Sometimes, I feel that the perspective people take reveals more about them than it does about the subject at hand. The Sheduer Sanders storyline is just a case study.

Have a good one! GO BROWNS!

How two freak accidents shaped human evolution - (bigthink.com)

I find this interesting perspective from scientist Sean B. Carroll, which may be of interest to some of my readers. Instead of viewing the evolution of humans as a "process" that finally reached its apex with the advent of the iPhone or whatever, Carroll sees it as an outcome of a series of random events that turned out to be very fortuitous for us.

Regardless of how you view the riddle of our existence, whether it is planned or random, it simply highlights the importance of cherishing every moment we have to live in our time. The odds against us were enormous.
