Newcastle United reach agreement to sign 24-year-old Serie A defender

Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United have reportedly reached an agreement to sign AC Milan defensive sensation Malick Thiaw.

According to an update by reputed Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Newcastle United are on the verge of securing the services of Malick Thiaw, as they have a verbal agreement in place with AC Milan. The deal was already in the final stages and is now considered done, with the player set to undergo a medical at his new club in the coming days.

Thiaw came up the ranks at FC Schalke 04 and made a name for himself while playing for their first team before joining the Italian giants in the summer of 2022. He has only gone from strength to strength since joining Milan, establishing himself as one of their mainstays.

Last season, the 24-year-old was involved in a total of 31 matches and even contributed towards two goals. While Malick Thiaw prefers playing as a centre-back, he can even feature as a full-back on either side and as a defensive midfielder when needed.

On the back of his impressive rise, multiple top clubs have been monitoring him. With his contract running out in two years, Newcastle United decided to make a move for the German international.

Newcastle United are set to sign Thiaw

The Magpies are looking to freshen things up at the back and build for the long run, with Fabian Schar and Dan Burn not getting any younger. Eddie Howe was keen on having a younger option at the back, and the Tyneside club have managed to strike a deal with Milan after long-drawn negotiations.

Securing the green light from the player’s end was not difficult for Newcastle United, as he was keen on making the switch. After weeks of negotiations, the Tyneside club made significant progress and have finally secured a verbal agreement with the Serie A outfit for a deal worth €40 million (including add-ons).

With the proposal now accepted, Newcastle United will look to finalise the paperwork in the coming days. Malick Thiaw will soon undergo a medical before an official announcement of the transfer arrives.
