Newcastle United have endured a frustrating summer ahead of the 2025-26 Premier League season.

Sandro Tonali is convinced Newcastle United have improved compared to the same stage last season.

Alexander Isak’s transfer saga has dominated the news agenda at St James’ Park in recent weeks. Coupled with Lloyd Kelly, Miguel Almiron, Sean Longstaff and Callum Wilson leaving in 2025, there are fears Eddie Howe has been left threadbare ahead of the new campaign.

Three weeks of the window remain for Newcastle to strike deals and give themselves the best possible chance next season. With the added pressures of Champions League football, the Magpies do not wish to make the same mistake as two years ago - when extra games caused injuries to mount up.

Speaking to the club’s matchday programme before the Atletico Madrid clash, Tonali assured fans that Newcastle are in “better” shape going into the new campaign. The Italian also urged his teammates to push on across all competitions.

“I speak for me, but I think for all the players here at Newcastle - we are better, for sure,” Tonali said. “We learn, every season, some things. We understand, every season, some things. We need to put this on the pitch for our team, for our fans, for our people, so we need to work together every day.

“It was a brilliant season (last year), but we need to push on again this season. This season is going to be long, with a lot of games, but we need to be competitive in the league, in the Champions League and both cups.

“We’ll play a game every three weeks or so and it’ll be tough. The team needs to be ready for every game and for the start of the season.”

Bruno Guimaraes issues battle cry

Bruno Guimaraes has already issued a battle cry following a disruptive window. He posted on Instagram last night: “Happy to be back home. A lot of work ahead. We need your support more than ever for this season full of challenges. Howay the lads.”

Howe opened up about Newcastle’s transfer situation following the game. He told reporters: "We are looking at the best players we can get. We are only looking at the best we can get, I see all situations open and available to us.

“I feel that is the only way we are going to get where we want to go, which is to maximise quality over quantity. It has been a challenging summer as you know.

“We have missed out on loads of different targets for different reasons. But we are still very competitive and we are still in there trying to bring good players to the club, that won't change until the window shuts."
