Taylor Elgersma of London, Ont. makes NFL preseason debut with Green Bay Packers

It was a small sample size, but Taylor Elgersma looked right at home on the NFL field as he made his preseason debut.

The London, Ont. native entered the game just before the two-minute warning in the fourth quarter of the Packers 30-10 loss to the New York Jets Saturday.

He was the fourth QB to enter the game for Green Bay but was efficient as the broadcasters laid out his back story coming from a Canadian University to the NFL.

After handing the ball off on his first play, he then zipped a ball over the middle to Will Sheppard for 10 yards and a first down.

After an incompletion and a short pass, he hit Sheppard again for a 10-yard pass on fourth-and-5 from the New York 45 for another first down.

The Packers let the time expire rather than calling timeouts to see more of him.

He finished the night 3-4 passing, for 24 yards.

The rookie is in a battle with veteran Sean Clifford for the third quarterback spot, but even though he’s been good, Packers Head Coach Matt Lafleur has said during training camp he needs to improve his ball placement and consistency. “I think he’s another guy that’s flashed,” Lafleur told Jason B. Hirschhorn of The Leap.

“He’s got the arm talent. It’s just the consistency. It’s always hard for a guy — the majority of the reps are going to Jordan [Love] and Malik [Willis]."

Lafleur told media after the loss to the Jets, he doesn’t expect the starters to play against the Indianapolis Colts, so Elgersma should get some increased playing time.
