Retired 49ers lineman floats un-retiring after O-line's struggles vs. Broncos

The San Francisco 49ers squared off against the Denver Broncos in preseason action on Saturday. The offensive line looked a little shaky, which led some fans to ask retired former Niner Jon Feliciano to come out of retirement and rejoin the team.

Feliciano responded on social media, saying, "Tell John to call me."

John, of course, is 49ers general manager John Lynch.

Of course, Feliciano could just be joking around. He has been known to partake in sarcasm and irony on social media, so this could be another instance where he is simply joking around.

Yet, when he did announce his retirement, he did leave the door open to returning. Maybe Feliciano does still have the itch and is looking to get back at it.

Feliciano was with the Niners in 2023 and played in 16 games, starting seven of them. He spent the earlier part of his career with the Oakland Raiders, Buffalo Bills, and New York Giants. Oakland selected him in the fourth round of the 2015 NFL Draft.

The University of Miami product re-signed with the Niners last season, but he did not see any action as he spent the year on injured reserve.

Probably what most 49ers fans remember with Feliciano is that he publicly called out his teammate Spencer Burford for a missed block in the Super Bowl on social media. He apologized for it and blamed it on a hangover, but it was definitely not his finest moment.

Ironically, part of what prompted people on social media to call for Feliciano to return was Spencer Burford's performance at left tackle. With Trent Williams obviously not playing in a meaningless preseason game, Burford got the start and got burned a few times allowing quarterback Mac Jones to get sacked.

San Francisco's O-line has a surprising lack of competition ahead of this season. For a group that faces a lot of question marks, it would make sense to bring in a guy or two just to make for some extra pressure on other players.

If not Feliciano, then maybe Lynch and Co. can call another offensive lineman to see if they could maybe get an upgrade somewhere up front so the team can protect quarterback Brock Purdy as effectively as possible.
