Liverpool fans furious as Diogo Jota moment of silence ruined at Community Shield

Liverpool fans reacted furiously after the period of silence at the start of Sunday's Community Shield was soured by a small minority of Crystal Palace fans at Wembley.

Supporters were told over the public announcement system to maintain silence at the start of the game as the players gathered at the center circle. The FA had confirmed in advanced that this would take place just before kick-off.

The Palace fans had been incredibly vocal before the game with excitement obviously high ahead of the club's first-ever Community Shield appearance.

As Chris Kavanagh blew his whistle to indicate the start of the match, the vast majority of the fans in the Palace end immediately fell silent, except for a small number behind Dean Henderson's goal.

That noise increased slightly, perhaps with some supporters instructing others to remain quiet.

Either way, it infuriated fans at the other end of the group, with Liverpool's section beginning to boo in response.

Seemingly in fear that scenes could soon turn unsavory, Kavanagh blew the whistle early in an embarrassing and regrettable incident from a handful of fans.

Before the game, Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, had appeared on the main screens at Wembley and there names had been displayed on the electronic boards around the outside.

Several Liverpool fans held up banners in honor of the club's no.20, with the players displaying the words "forever 20" on their matchday shirts.

Before the game, FA chair Debbie Hewitt, former Liverpool legend Ian Rush and Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish lay wreaths on the pitch in honor of the siblings who tragically died in a car crash in northern Spain.

Aren Slot once again paid tribute to the Portuguese in his pre-match program notes, as was the case before Sunday's friendly against Athletic Bilbao.
