Promising Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver turns heads in first preseason game

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. --Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Roman Wilson came into Saturday’s preseason game with a lot to play for after missing most of his rookie season with injuries.

For Wilson, just getting on the field was a blessing. But his first big play, a dig route against standout Jaguars cornerback Tyson Campbell, showcased that he could do something the team had questions about, which was him playing on the outside.

“It was just a real blessing to be able to start the game off like that,” Wilson said. “Just a nice little in cut. It was nothing crazy. It was just a nice little dig.”

Wilson played just two drives, but his offensive contributions from this week translated to in-game action. Now, the Steelers wide receiver feels like he is playing more freely on the football field and not overthinking things.

“Just coming out and executing,” Wilson said. “Starting the game off running. Mike Tomlin likes to say, ‘Don’t beat ourselves.’ So I think the offense did a really good job with that... I just feel a lot better and more comfortable.”

Over the last three days of training camp, Rodgers and Wilson have started to strengthen their connection. Wilson made multiple tough grabs over the middle, one of the traits the Steelers loved when they were scouting him out of Michigan.

Now, it happened in a game, and it feels like Wilson might be on the right track to gaining himself a bigger role in the Steelers’ offense.
