Arsenal and Spurs interested in German defender

Arsenal cruised to a 3-0 victory over Spanish side Athletic Bilbao in their final friendly of the summer on Saturday.

Mikel Arteta’s side welcomed their La Liga counterparts to North London for the final of The Emirates Cup, and new signing Viktor Gyokeres put the hosts ahead in the first half, before Bukayo Saka doubled their advantage moments later.

After the break, Kai Havertz added the Gunners’ third to cap off an impressive display by Arteta’s side, who face Manchester United in their first match of the new Premier League season next weekend.

In the meantime, it appears that the Gunners are interested in a Serie A star.

According to CaughtOffside, both Arsenal and North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur are keeping tabs on AC Milan defender Malick Thiaw.

It is claimed that the two London sides have both identified the German as a possible target as they search for defensive reinforcements.

Fellow Premier League side Nottingham Forest are also said to be monitoring the 24-year-old, while Newcastle United have already tabled an offer in the region of £26 million.

Thiaw joined Milan from German side Schalke in 2022 and has since played 85 times for the club across all competitions.

His versatility will likely appeal to potential suitors, with the Germany international capable of playing in a number of defensive roles including as a central defender, right-back, left-back, or even as a defensive midfielder.

German side Bayer Leverkusen are also said to be interested in the defender, while Italian outlet Como had agreed a fee with Milan but the player himself has rejected the proposed switch.

Thiaw is under contract with Milan until the end of the 2026/27 season, but it appears that he could be on the way to England this summer.
