What went wrong for Liverpool in Community Shield defeat

Liverpool started strongly at Wembley, with Hugo Ekitike opening the scoring inside four minutes on his competitive debut.

The striker’s sharp turn and finish from a Florian Wirtz pass showcased his quality and Jeremie Frimpong later restored the Reds’ lead with a looping effort over Dean Henderson.

However, defensive errors proved costly. Virgil van Dijk conceded a penalty after fouling Ismaila Sarr, allowing Jean-Philippe Mateta to level.

Later, a lapse in the high line let Sarr in again to make it 2-2 with a composed finish.

The Reds’ attacking momentum was undone by these mistakes, leaving Arne Slot frustrated with his back line’s concentration.

Liverpool’s missed chances and penalty heartbreak

Liverpool had opportunities to seal the Community Shield win in normal time, with Ekitike, Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah all going close.

Henderson denied Gakpo in a one-on-one, while Salah sent a late chance straight at the Palace goalkeeper.

The match went to penalties, where Liverpool faltered.

Salah blazed over, Alexis Mac Allister saw his shot saved and Harvey Elliott was denied.

Henderson’s heroics gave Palace a 3-2 shootout win, handing Oliver Glasner’s side the trophy.

Despite the Community Shield defeat, Slot will take positives from his new signings’ performances, but the defensive frailties and wastefulness in front of goal will be major concerns heading into the season.
