Reyna absent for Dortmund's final preseason friendly

Gio Reyna was not in Borussia Dortmund's squad for its final preseason friendly against Juventus on Sunday due to an illness, according to a report from Ruhr Nachrichten.

Since the conclusion of the German giants' Bundesliga campaign back on May 17, the U.S. men's national team midfielder has only featured in one game, playing 12 minutes in their final group stage match of the Club World Cup against Ulsan HD.

The 22-year-old was also not listed on the squad for Dortmund's first two friendly matches against Sportfreunde Siegen and Lille.

Reyna, who has seen his role diminish in recent years, will see his contract expire next summer. This could be the perfect opportunity for Dortmund to make a profit on the playmaker, who is clearly not in its plans for the upcoming season.

Previously, Reyna was linked to Serie A side Parma, which is owned by American businessman Kyle Krause.

However, according to a recent report from Gianluca Di Marzio, the Italian club and FC Midtjylland are closing in on the transfer of Oliver Sørensen for a package worth €8-9 million, including bonuses.

The Danish midfielder has similar qualities to Reyna, which could see the Serie A club end its pursuit for the USMNT player.

With the World Cup coming up next summer, Reyna needs playing time to secure a spot in the squad.

As head coach Mauricio Pochettino has previously advocated the value of playing time, the playmaker must find a solution to his limited minutes if he wants the opportunity to represent the USMNT on home soil.
