to the title last season and with less than a week to go until the new campaign kicks-off were hoping to add more silverware to the club's bulging trophy cabinet in the 3pm kick-off at Wembley. They faced a Palace side who stunned Manchester City on their last visit to Wembley in May to claim the FA Cup, which was the first major trophy in the South London club's history.

A minute’s silence in honour of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva was interrupted at Wembley as referee Chris Kavanagh was forced to call an early halt to the tribute. A small minority of Crystal Palace supporters jeered throughout the silence.

The majority of fans in the Palace end quickly urged those making noise to be quiet as they shushed their noisy peers. When such calls went unanswered, Liverpool’s travelling supporters booed those interrupting the silence.

In an action packed start, Liverpool took a lead after just four minutes thanks to a goal from new striker Hugo Ekiteke. Palace soon equalised on the 17th minute after Virgil Van Dijk was judged to have brought down Ismaila Sarr and Jean-Philippe Mateta converted from 12 yards out.

Liverpool quickly responded four minutes later as new right-back Jeremie Frimpong’s cross ended up sailing in to the goal at the back post. The reds had the chance to increase their lead with two chances from Ekitike but Palace increased the pressure as the second half went on, resulting in a goal from Sarr in the 77th minute.

The game went straight to penalties and Liverpool made a poor start, with Mo Salah and Alexis Mac Allister missing the first two spot kicks. Mateta was able to put Palace in front but Eberechi Eze wasn’t able to put them two up in the shoot-out.

Cody Gakpo was the first Liverpool player to score from 12 yards before Sarr put the Eagles 2-1 up. Then Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott and Palace’s Borna Sosa both missed their spot kicks. Dominik Szoboszlai made it 2-2 in the shoot out but Justin Devenny scored the winning spot-kick as the south London club celebrated their second victory at Wembley this year.
