He went even further, questioning the strength of the league overall. “What does that say about the rest of the league? … One of the worst rosters in NBA history to make the finals.”
The Pacers’ 2024-25 campaign was still one of the most memorable in franchise history. In their 58th season, and second straight playoff run under Rick Carlisle, Indiana posted a 50-win season — their best since 2013-14 — and secured the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference.
It wasn’t smooth sailing. Key big men Isaiah Jackson and James Wiseman both went down with Achilles injuries, forcing the front office to bring in depth at center, including Thomas Bryant, Tony Bradley, and Jahlil Okafor.
Despite the setbacks, the Pacers had an impressive playoff run. They took down the Milwaukee Bucks in the first round, then knocked out the top-seeded Cleveland Cavaliers in just five games.
In the Eastern Conference Finals, Indiana beat the New York Knicks in six games to make their second NBA Finals appearance ever.
The Finals stage, however, belonged to the 68-win Oklahoma City Thunder. Indiana pushed the series to Game 7, but hopes were crushed when Tyrese Haliburton tore his Achilles early in the deciding game.
