Dean Henderson reveals Oliver Glasner’s second-half message that helped Crystal Palace beat Liverpool

Dean Henderson proved to be the penalty shootout hero for Crystal Palace as Liverpool missed three penalties in the Community Shield.

Crystal Palace have just secured their second trophy in three months after defeating Liverpool 3-2 on penalties after forcing the game to spot kicks.

Ismaila Sarr scored in the 77th minute to level the match and send the game to penalties, which saw Henderson step up to the plate at Wembley.

Palace spent 69 minutes of the match trailing, so the team needed some inspiration from their manager to keep going against the Premier League champions.

Dean Henderson reveals Oliver Glasner’s half-time message

Dean Henderson has revealed that Oliver Glasner was adamant Palace would get chances in the second half, which Sarr managed to take.

The Eagles went into the break 2-1 down and in need of inspiration following what was an impressive first-half display from the Reds.

Speaking after the win, Henderson told TNT Sports: “These emotions are fantastic. You’d think when they were 2-1 up, we were out of the game, but the lads stuck by it.

“The manager said we’d get chances in the second half in transitions, we defended great, and we deserved to win that in the end.”

Liverpool’s new signings, Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike, both impressed and combined for the opening goal of the game.

Jean-Philippe Mateta equalised from the penalty spot for the Eagles before Jeremie Frimpong restored the league winners’ lead.

Then, during the shootout, Henderson saved penalties from Harvey Elliott and Alexis Mac Allister, whilst Mohammed Salah blasted his effort over the crossbar.

It was another heroic afternoon at Wembley as the former Manchester United goalkeeper stepped up to the plate for the South London club.
