Palace end 50-year streak, condemn Liverpool to unwanted first with Community Shield win

Crystal Palace have condemned Liverpool to an unwanted first after winning their first-ever Community Shield by beating the Reds 3-2 on penalties following a 2-2 draw at Wembley Stadium on Sunday.

Liverpool entered this contest as Premier League champions and strong favourites to come out on top against a Palace outfit who lifted their first major piece of silverware in their 120-year professional history when they beat Manchester City 1-0 in the FA Cup final in May.

Arne Slot’s side made the perfect start as record signing Florian Wirtz set up fellow new recruit Hugo Ekitike to score a fourth-minute opener, before Jean-Philippe Mateta restored parity from the penalty spot after Ismaila Sarr was felled inside the box by Virgil van Dijk.

Liverpool regained the lead at a poignant moment as Jeremie Frimpong - another new signing - saw his floated cross towards the back post drop into the net on the 20-minute mark as supporters around Wembley paid tribute to the late Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva.

The Reds were made to rue missed opportunities to extend their lead in the second half, as Sarr equalised for a much-improved Eagles side with a clinical finish in off the post in the 77th minute, forcing the game to be decided on penalties.

Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson - who saved a penalty in the FA Cup final - was the shootout hero for Oliver Glasner’s side as he saved spot kicks from Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott, before substitute Justin Devenny smashed home the winning penalty.

Glasner hails “big performance” from Palace after winning Community Shield

Palace have now celebrated two trophy triumphs in a matter of months at the home of football and they have become the first team since Derby County back in 1975 to win the Community Shield on their debut in the showpiece.

Liverpool, meanwhile, have suffered back-to-back defeats at Wembley for the first time in the same calendar year after also losing 2-1 to Newcastle United in the EFL Cup final in March.

Reacting to Palace’s victory, Glasner told TNT Sports after the match: "I like it (the feeling of winning at Wembley). I have to give big credit to the players for this win today, we came back and were able to decide the game on penalties.

“We were on the same level as Liverpool and it was a big performance, I'm proud of the team.

"I told the players to keep calm (at half time), I was proud of how they played. They were unlucky with the second (Liverpool) goal. I knew if we stuck to the plan then we would get our chances and we always know if we take them we will win the game.

"We know what we can do and how we can create chances. Things have developed over 18 months and the players are really starting to believe in what we are doing. I knew we could score at least two goals."

Palace’s focus will now shift to their Premier League opener away against Chelsea next Saturday, although they will also have one eye on tomorrow’s judgement day when they will discover from the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) whether their appeal against demotion from the Europa League has been successful.
