Liverpool eye shock move for Premier League forward

Premier League champions Liverpool suffered a surprise penalty shootout defeat against FA Cup holders Crystal Palace in the Community Shield on Sunday.

The Reds took the lead early on at Wembley when new signing Hugo Ekitike scored, but Jean-Philippe Mateta soon drew the Eagles level from the penalty spot.

Fellow debutant Jeremie Frimpong then restored the advantage for Arne Slot’s side, who looked to be heading for victory until late on when Ismaila Sarr levelled things up once again.

That goal sent the tie to penalties, and Mohamed Salah blazed the first spot-kick over the bar.

Mateta then scored, before both Alexis Mac Allister and Eberechi Eze missed their penalties, meaning Palace were 2-1 ahead.

Both sides scored their third kicks and missed their fourth and, although Dominik Szoboszlai scored Liverpool’s fifth, substitute Justin Devenny slotted past Alisson to secure the trophy for Palace.

Now, it appears that Liverpool are considering a shock move for a Premier League forward in the closing weeks of the transfer window.

As reported by CaughtOffside, the Premier League champions have identified Brentford’s Yoane Wissa as a possible alternative to transfer target Alexander Isak.

The Reds have been heavily linked with a move for Isak for much of the summer so far, however they are now assessing alternative options in case they fail to land the Swede.

With that in mind, the Merseyside giants are keeping tabs on Wissa, who is likely to depart Brentford this month.

It is claimed that the DR Congo international has attracted interest from a multitude of clubs, including Saudi sides NEOM and Al Nassr.

Premier League clubs Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur are also credited with an interest in the striker, who is valued by the Bees at £50 million.

Wissa joined Brentford from French side Lorient in 2021 and has since played 149 times for the West London club across all competitions, scoring 49 goals and registering 13 assists.

Last season he netted 19 times in 35 Premier League games, but it appears that he could leave the club before the end of the current transfer window.
