Donnarumma in? Bayindir Out? How Man United deal with the goalkeeping situation

Manchester United are just a week away from kicking off the Premier League season against Arsenal and there is huge uncertainty over who will start that game in goal.

Ruben Amorim's men host the Gunners at Old Trafford next Sunday (August 17) and it could be a massive indication of how the Reds will fare this season. They come up against the best goalscorer in Europe last season, Viktor Gyokeres.

Andre Onana is optimistic of returning to fitness for the clash but his future at the club has been uncertain amid his hamstring injury. Altay Bayindir has filled in for the Cameroonian goalkeeper during pre-season but has done himself no favours regarding cementing his place in Amorim's long-term plans.

With the transfer rumour mill suggesting United are looking at a european champion, Red Devil Armada have decided to advise INEOS how to go about their goalkeeping business. The shop window shuts on September 1 and there's still a job to do.

Fixing Man United's goalkeeping situation

Buy Gianluigi Donnarumma if fee is below £30m

Gianluigi Donnarumma is likely to leave PSG this summer with his contract expiring next summer. The Italian was crucial for the Parisians as they finally claimed the Champions League trophy last season.

But Luis Enrique doesn't appear to be a fan of Donnarumma and has swooped for Lucas Chevalier as his replacement. The Ligue 1 giants have informed the 25-year-old that their new signing will be their undisputed number one next season, per Fabrizio Romano.

talkSPORT journalist Anil Kandola reports that Donnarumma is interested in joining United. Initial links seemed implausible given he's a goalkeeper of whom many feel will claim the Yashin Trophy at the Ballon d'Or awards ceremony.

If there's an opportunity to sign the 74-cap Italy international at a fee of below £30m then it's a deal that INEOS surely must take up. If they can negotiate a price below that mark it will be a superb acquistion for a shot-stopper who could be between the sticks long-term.

Sell Altay Bayindir

Altay Bayindir was United's penalty shootout hero in their FA Cup third-round win away to Arsenal last season. Fast forward seven months and the Turkish goalkeeper remains backup to Andre Onana and has been unreliable when called upon.

The 27-year-old seems to be a popular character amongst his teammates but he doesn't have the prescence required to give a United number one vital competition. It's why Amorim stuck by Onana through his clangers because an inferior option sat on the bench.

If the Reds can move the Turk on it will be for his benefit as much as the club. He has two years left on his contract but surely is one INEOS are mulling over letting go.

Buy Senne Lammens if Donnarumma is over £30m

Most Premier League clubs have a strong goalkeeping duo who can rotate and help their teams compete in Europe and domestically. It would be a dream situation to sign both Senne Lammens and Donnarumma and have them battle it out for the number one jersey.

Let's be honest though it's unlikely either would be happy to be viewed as a backup so if one is there for the taking it should be the more experienced Donnarumma. But if the Italian costs more than £30m than the Belgian is the better option.

The 23-year-old is one of Europe's best upcoming keepers but his inexperience is something to be wary of. It's thought the Royal Antwerp shot-stopper will cost around £13-17m, per The Mirror.

Sell Andre Onana in January

If it weren't for Andre Onana's constant mistakes he'd be one of the most popular players with the Old Trafford faithful. The Cameroonian cares about the club and wears his heart on his sleeve but he just hasn't been good enough to be the David de Gea replacement we required.

Onana should be placed in the last chance saloon and maybe could see out his contract if it were Lammens to arrive rather than Donnarumma. But if the 29-year-old continues to be undependable than January should be the time INEOS decide to offload.

There's no doubt he'll be playing for his United future as soon as he's fit whether that be against Arsenal or after that game. Amorim seems to really like him and he's a good character to have in the dressing room, just a shame that doesn't translate to consistent performances.
