Aston Villa and Wolves have been linked with a talented Belgian international
Ferguson took charge of Rangers in February after the club’s decision to sack former head coach Philippe Clement midway through the season. The former Ibrox captain, who also starred for Birmingham when they won the League Cup in 2011, won six of his 15 games in charge in Glasgow and saw first hand just how much quality Raskin had in the middle of the park.
Barry Ferguson praises Nico Raskin
In an interview with the Daily Record, Barry Ferguson admitted he wasn’t surprised to see Nico Raskin attracting interest from Premier League clubs. He said: “Nico can play in the Premier League all day long. I worked with him for three months. He has all the attributes and is still at a brilliant age.
“He still has some things he needs to tidy up on, but he understands that. He's got an opinion which I liked. He's really interested and keen to learn. All day long he can play in the Premier League. Now, Rangers have got to be looking for big money for Nico. I am looking at £15 million at least for Nico - and the rest!”
Why Wolves and Aston Villa are both interested in Nico Raskin
Nico Raskin contributed five goals and 11 assists in all competitions last season from the middle of the park. He was a near ever present for a Rangers team that struggled in last year’s title race and was a class above many of his teammates over the course of the campaign. Raskin showcased quality in European competitions and has recently established himself as a Belgian international in the run-up to next summer’s World Cup in North America.
He’s a player that could add to Aston Villa’s squad depth with a 50+ game season on the horizon and has been identified by Vitor Pereira for Wolves as a player that could add competition to Joao Gomes and Andre in the middle, particularly after Tommy Doyle’s exit to Birmingham City.
Raskin has played five times for Rangers already across all competitions this term, registering one assist during a 2-0 victory over Greek side Panathanikos in a Champions League qualifier. He’s currently managed by former Southampton boss Russell Martin and is contracted until 2027.
