NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - The New Orleans Saints’ preseason slate started with a loss, 27-13, and the quarterback battle is still murky between Tyler Shough and Spencer Rattler.
Shough had his welcome to the NFL moment in the third quarter, throwing a 43-yard pick-6. That staked the Chargers to a two-touchdown lead, 17-3.
Shough would respond, connecting with Mason Tipton on a 54-yard touchdown. The Saints trailed the Chargers after the touchdown, 17-10.
Shough finished the game going 15/22 passing for 165 yards. That included a TD pass and an interception.
Rattler was under center for five series with the Saints. Unfortunately for the Black and Gold, those series resulted in zero points. The second-year quarterback finished 7-of-11 passing for 53 yards. He lost a fumble on a sack that resulted in three points for the Chargers.
The Saints appeared to be in great shape to score a touchdown in the first quarter. Treyton Welch recovered a muffed punt at the Chargers’ 17-yard line. But on fourth down at the Chargers’ 1-yard line, Kendre Miller was stuffed for a 3-yard loss.
The Chargers scored the only touchdown of the first half. Trey Lance found the end zone on a 5-yard touchdown in the second quarter to extend the Chargers’ advantage, 9-0. Saints would answer with a Blake Grupe 31-yard field goal.
