Petrovic and Truffert impressive: Five things we learned in Sociedad draw

It saw them complete a pre-season of three wins, two defeats and a draw, ahead of their season curtain raiser on Friday night against Liverpool.

Here’s five things we learned in the draw at the Vitality Stadium.

**Petrovic is good at penalties**

New goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic made a fine save from a Mikel Oyarzabal spot kick – but for those who had read up on the keeper after his arrival may not have been surprised.

He was the fastest player to reach five penalty saves for New England Revolution in the MLS, and shortly into his time at Chelsea, he saved a penalty against Newcastle in a shootout to send the Blues through to the Carabao Cup semifinals.

_(Image: Richard Crease)_ While that is only one aspect of his game – and he looked solid across the 90 minutes – it gives fans a little more confidence should penalties be awarded against the Cherries.

**Adrien Truffert looks a good signing**

The French left back looked impressive both defensively and going forward. He replaces Milos Kerkez in the Cherries side, and he has big boots to fill on that front.

But he looks to be a more than adequate replacement from his early showings, and looked good against the La Liga side, overlapping and combining well with Antoine Semenyo, who was playing on the left wing on Saturday.

**Marcus Tavernier may see more minutes in midfield**

The Englishman is primarily a forward – but after impressing in midfield in the final game of last season, and with injuries hitting the Cherries in the summer, he has got more minutes there in pre-season.

He looks composed in midfield and has the passing range and dribbling ability to bring the ball up from deep in transition, which could be a positive for Iraola this season.

_(Image: Richard Crease)_ Once Ryan Christie and Lewis Cook return from injury, Tavernier will more than likely move back to the forward line, but it is a good option to have for the Basque boss.

**David Brooks was energetic and everywhere**

The Welshman captained the side on Saturday – and put in an excellent performance that saw him awarded man of the match.

With Dango Ouattara reportedly keen to explore his options to move on this summer, Brooks may well be needed to play an important role for the Cherries this season.

And by his performance on Saturday, he could be a key influence – he has the ability to unlock defences and his energy up front could be vital in the Iraola press, supporting the ever-energetic Evanilson.

_(Image: Richard Crease)_ He also has a good eye for goal and a passing range to pick out the Brazilian’s runs in behind the defence, so he may be key in the early stages of the campaign.

**The lack of efficiency in attack continues**

This is not a new problem.

Iraola often describes his team as a ‘volume team’, and this was shown on Saturday, with a number of chances going begging and the Cherries unable to convert.

Without Evanilson in the side – he played earlier in the day in the behind-closed-doors friendly – they look a little less likely to score, as Eli Junior Kroupi continues to adapt to the English game.

The young striker looked very promising, but he must be given time to step up from French Ligue 2 football into the Premier League.

The entire forward unit will need to pull their weight this season and get goals, and while being a volume team has its positives, they need to put some of those chances away and become more efficient in attack.

Particularly against teams like Liverpool where chances will be at more of a premium, converting their chances will be vital, otherwise they will be punished.
