Alexander Isak told to leave Newcastle United amid Liverpool interest

Alexander Isak’s future at Newcastle United remains in limbo amid reported Liverpool interest.

Former Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant has claimed it is in Newcastle United’s best interests to sell Alexander Isak.

Uncertainty over the Swede’s future has developed into the biggest transfer saga of the summer. Isak has not kicked a ball in pre-season as he angles for move to Liverpool.

Will Osula and Anthony Gordon led the line as Newcastle failed to record a win in any of their six tune-up fixtures. Liverpool saw an opening offer - worth around £110million - rejected 10 days ago.

Alexander Isak price tag

Newcastle have always maintained a robust £150million price tag for a player they believe to be the world’s best striker. That is despite Isak confirming his intention to leave - a position which weakens United’s negotiating position.

However, three years remaining on his current deal does give Newcastle significant strength. It is understood the 25-year-old will only move on if the Magpies find an adequate replacement.

Liverpool fans have gotten carried away by news that Yoane Wissa is likely to join Newcastle. But the Brentford man - should he arrive - would become Callum Wilson’s replacement.

Former Liverpool man speaks out

Ex-Reds star Pennant believes Newcastle should accept the £110million that was on offer and reinvest in the squad. He told talkSPORT: "If you've got one hand tied behind your back, then it's very difficult to get transfers in and build on your team and then you're fighting a losing battle.

“I'm not just saying this because I'm a Liverpool fan but wouldn't it be in probably everybody's best interest if Newcastle cashed in on Isak. It's because not only will you be getting (big money), Newcastle will be getting (rid of) a player that is very unhappy and you may not get the best out of him this season because of all the noise that's gone on.

"You then can use that money to replace him and get other players without worrying about PSR. And then everyone gets what they want, Newcastle rebuild and move on. I think it will be in everyone's best interest if Newcastle took £110million.”

Eddie Howe wants to keep Alexander Isak

Eddie Howe has kept Isak away from the first-team squad while the saga unfolds. Despite that, the Toon boss hopes to keep the striker at St James’ Park.

"He's contracted to us,” he said at the weekend. “He's our player. The club make the decision on his future.

"I don't know what that will be. Of course, I have a preferred outcome. I want the best and strongest squad possible, but also I want players that really want to play for this club."
