Leeds United must take golden chance to sign £20m lethal striker before season begins - opinion

Leeds United are preparing for life in the Premier League following their promotion

Leeds United stormed to the Championship title last season. They went up along with Burnley and Sunderland in the end. Daniel Farke’s side are preparing for life in the Premier League and need to ensure that they are ready for the step up in quality.

The Whites have the chance to bring in some more new signings before the end of the transfer window on Monday 1st September. They also have the opportunity to let some players leave as well over the coming weeks. The West Yorkshire club face Everton at Elland Road in their first game next Monday.

Leeds United should eye Josh Sargent move

Leeds need to ensure that they get their recruitment right to deal with top flight opponents. They must add more firepower to their ranks before Everton come to town. The Whites have let Mateo Joseph leave for RCD Mallorca so have a vacancy to fill at the top end of the pitch.

Step forward Josh Sargent, who has been a key player for Farke’s former team Norwich City over recent times. His future at Carrow Road is up in the air right now. It remains to be seen whether he will stay put with the Canaries or head out the exit door for a new challenge.

Sargent, 25, would be ideal for Leeds if they managed to lure him up north. He is a proven goal scorer in the second tier and should now test himself at a higher level again. His current club signed him back in 2021 and he has since become one of their most prized assets.

The USA international, who has 28 caps under his belt, has scored 49 goals in 139 competitive games since his switch to East Anglia, 15 of which came in the last campaign. His contract expires in 2028 meaning Norwich are under no immediate pressure to sell him anytime soon. They can wait for the right offer to come in for his signature if they are to let him depart. His price tag is said to be £20 million.

Why Josh Sargent would suit Leeds United

Sargent would give Leeds some much needed competition and depth up front. He would give the Whites another option to pick from at the top end of the pitch. In addition, he would offer Farke something different to call upon in games.

The Missouri-born man moved over to Europe as a teenager back in 2017 to join Werder Bremen. He rose up through the ranks of the German outfit and was a regular for them at various different youth levels. He then broke into their first-team in 2018 and found the net on 15 occasions in 81 outings before his transfer to England.

It would be a big surprise if he was still at Norwich beyond the deadline next month. The Whites should try and test the Canaries’ resolve with an offer. Their signings so far have mainly been players from abroad which is a risk and they could do with getting a couple of players in now who know the league already.

If they signed Sargent, it shouldn’t take him too long to adapt as he has played in the top flight before. In addition, he has lived in this country for a while now as well so could settle in quickly. Leeds’ first opponents Everton will be in confident mood under David Moyes and are moving into their new stadium this term as they gear up for a new era.
