Liverpool have now identified “incredible” player as their ideal Isak alternative – report

Liverpool are believed to be eyeing an “incredible” striker as a potential alternative to Alexander Isak, amid their search for a new attacker.

The Reds were beaten on penalties in the Community Shield on Sunday, with Crystal Palace prevailing on penalties after a 2-2 draw at Wembley.

While Hugo Ekitike shone on the day, opening the scoring, it is clear that Liverpool need to sign another striker before the end of the summer transfer window, especially with Darwin Nunez leaving the club.

Isak has constantly been mentioned as the Premier League champions’ dream target this summer, with one offer already rejected by Newcastle United.

Things have quietened down of late, however, with the Magpies not considering selling the Swede until they sort new signings, so Liverpool could have to look at other options.

According to Caught Offside, Brentford ace Yoane Wissa is being eyed up by the Merseysiders, with the 28-year-old also a strong target for Newcastle currently.

Liverpool are said to be “keeping a watchful eye on developments”, as well as “exploring several attacking reinforcements” this month.

Is Wissa a good enough alternative to Isak for Liverpool?

Wissa is unquestionably a good player, having scored 19 goals in the Premier League last season, also being hailed for his exploits alongside Bryan Mbeumo by former manager Thomas Frank:

“That’s an incredible achievement from the two of them. All praise due the two of them for the hard work, how much they push, and then of course to my staff, and then I think a little bit to the way we play.”

At 28, though, Wissa wouldn’t represent a long-term signing for Liverpool, and with Brentford demanding big money for him, it would be a risky piece of business.

Ultimately, the Reds still need to go all in on Isak this summer, hoping that Newcastle’s stance softens after they sign one or two strikers to replace him.

If they do end up missing out on the 25-year-old, it is vital that they still bring in a striker from somewhere, with their attacking options feeling light after the exits of Nunez and Luis Diaz, as well as the tragic passing of Diogo Jota.
