Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon has issued an injury update ahead of Aston Villa.

Unai Emery’s side host Newcastle in their opening match of the new Premier League season at Villa Park on Saturday (12:30pm).

Gordon’s fitness was thrown into doubt when he suffered an ankle injury in a pre-season clash with Atletico Madrid on Saturday.

He was substituted in the closing stages at St James’ Park as Newcastle lost 2-0, although manager Eddie Howe later played down concerns over the player.

“We hope he’s okay,” he said. “We think he’s got an ankle problem. Initially, maybe thought it was a muscle problem but the good news is that we think it is just a twist. So the initial feeling is that he should be okay.

“The last thing we want going into the last week is any type of injury to any player. We don’t have the depth to cover that so fingers crossed he is okay.”

Gordon has since issued an update, posting on Instagram: “Just twisted my ankle, no problems. Glad to be back home. Business time next.”

Gordon looks set to start up front for Newcastle against Villa in the absence of Alexander Isak, whose Newcastle future is in severe doubt amid transfer interest from Liverpool.
