‘It seems ridiculous…’ Gary Lineker powerfully predicts Man Utd 2025/26 table finish, Alan Shearer feels same way

Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer have now revealed how they think Manchester United will perform in the 2025-26 season under manager Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford.

Ruben Amorim has completed his first full pre-season as Manchester United manager this summer after the Red Devils’ disastrous 2024-25 campaign.

The Red Devils signed off their pre-season tour on Saturday at Old Trafford, with Manchester United defeating Serie A side Fiorentina in a penalty shootout win.

Following United’s result against Fiorentina, the Red Devils will kick off their 2025-26 campaign at home against Premier League rivals Arsenal on Sunday afternoon.

United’s fixture list for the forthcoming Premier League season dropped in June and the Red Devils face a tricky start to the campaign under Red Devils boss Amorim.

The Red Devils’ first five Premier League matches include an encounter with Manchester City at the Etihad in September and hosting Chelsea at Old Trafford.

Gary Lineker singles out Man Utd summer signing Benjamin Sesko in his 2025-26 Premier League season for Ruben Amorim’s men

Benjamin Sesko has become Manchester United’s latest transfer acquisition and the 22-year-old Slovenian striker received the red-carpet treatment on Saturday.

The former RB Leipzig striker took to the Old Trafford pitch ahead of the Fiorentina match alongside fellow signings Matheus Cunha, Diego Leon and Bryan Mbeumo.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Gary Lineker touched on the arrival of Benjamin Sesko and tipped United to finish “mid-table” in the 2025-26 season.

“Manchester United,” he said, before adding: “I mean, they have bought, you know, three players in.

“We don’t know how good Sesko is going to be in the Premier League. I think he scored, what, 13 goals last season? Mid-table? I see mid-table.

“They need to improve on last season. So, I think to get into Europe, I mean, it seems ridiculous to say this about Manchester United, doesn’t it?

“To get into any kind of European football next season would probably be a bonus.”

Alan Shearer tells Gary Lineker where Man Utd will finish in the Premier League table in 2026 under Ruben Amorim

The Red Devils suffered their worst finish in the Premier League era during the 2024-25 campaign, with United limping to 15th place in the table back in May.

Amorim’s men are now without European football after United’s 2025 Europa League final loss to Tottenham ended a potential route back to the Champions League.

Alan Shearer told The Rest Is Football co-host Lineker that he could see United finishing in the top half of the table under Red Devils boss Amorim in 2026.

“I mean, clearly they’ll improve on last season,” he said.

“They can’t be as bad. Yeah, they’ve made a couple of really good signings, but yeah, I think seven, eighth, ninth, something like that.”

Responding to the Premier League legend, Lineker said: “I thought so.”

United and Arsenal’s clash at Old Trafford on the opening weekend of the new Premier League season is slated for a 4:30pm UK kick-off time on Sunday.
