Alexander Isak has been given a new transfer ultimatum that has been described as a ‘significant step’ by Newcastle United in a potential sale.

The situation has reached a breaking point at St James’ Park, with manager Eddie Howe admitting he cannot currently involve Isak in first-team activities.

The striker has been training separately from his teammates since returning from his unauthorized absence during Newcastle’s pre-season tour of Asia.

He also did not feature in any of Newcastle’s games in the Sela Cup over the past weekend.

Newcastle United insider Lee Ryder, reporting for the Chronicle, has revealed that the Magpies have told Isak and his representatives that a deal with Liverpool could be forthcoming if a bigger offer is tabled by the Reds:

“Newcastle are yet to get an increased offer for Isak with the last bid from Liverpool coming on August 1 from the Reds,” Ryder wrote.

“That offer, worth around £110m, was swiftly rejected.”

The reporter then revealed the ultimatum:

“What must follow is a heftier bid, there has been talk of £150m but others on the agent circuit have suggested that £130m plus add ons may yet offer a breakthrough.

“Either way Isak has been handed an ultimatum, no serious offer – no transfer.”

“Until then the door is ajar for Isak to get his boots on and train in the build-up to Villa Park and play again for the black-and-whites, something he has shown no interest in doing this pre-season.”

The timing couldn’t better for Liverpool.

The Reds have just completed the sale of Darwin Nunez to Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal for £46.3 million, freeing up both funds and squad space for a marquee signing.

With Isak reportedly “refusing to accept” Newcastle’s stance and Liverpool ready to pounce at the first sign of encouragement, this transfer saga appears far from over .
