At a time when Welsh rugby is in desperate need for something positive, Louis Rees-Zammit is coming home.
The electric winger is returning to the rugby union after his time in the NFL. A player who brings a certain x-factor to any team should have an abundance of suitors to choose from.
Still only 24, yet already seasoned and explosive. The next chapter of career could be the most thrilling yet. The bookmakers have their opinions on where he could end up. Let’s dive into them.
Best bet: Gloucester
Coming in at 2/1, we have Gloucester. The club is synonymous with Rees-Zammit, as that is where the Welshman called home before heading stateside.
Rees-Zammit scored many eye-catching tries for Gloucester, endearing himself to the Kingsholm faithful.
Gloucester would be an intriguing option for Rees-Zammit. A side that plays an incredibly open and expansive style of rugby. He would also be running out with fellow Welsh internationals.
Players such as Tomos Williams. Josh Hathaway and Max Llewellyn have been constant figures at Kingsholm.
A return to Gloucester would make the most sense, but the odds are the same for him to go to any other English club, with Bristol Bears often looking likely.
Value bet: any French club
Even a return to the Premiership looks likely, you can’t rule out a move to France. Value can be found on these 5/2 odds.
Historically, outfits that attract big players, and you can argue, compete in the most competitive league in the world. Rees-Zammit could fit in well with teams in the Top 14.
A change in scenery can spark greatness; just ask Blair Kinghorn, Jack Willis, or Sam Davies. Rees-Zammit could be next. Teams like Toulouse, Racing 92, and Bordeaux come to mind.
However, a plausible option could be La Rochelle.
Before his contract extension with Edinburgh, rumours were flying around that he could be heading to the Ronan O’Gara-coached team.
If they still want an explosive and dynamic winger, then Rees-Zammit could fit that mould.
Longshot bet: Cardiff Rugby
It’s a long shot, but it’s amazing to see Rees-Zammit storm the Capital and join this exciting Cardiff side. The bookmakers don’t see it happening, having the move at 10/1.
For Welsh to thrive, its brightest lights must burn at home, and Rees-Zammit’s glow could lead the way. Like Gloucester, Cardiff plays an expansive style of rugby that is entertaining to watch.
It’s a position that Cardiff needs more depth in after the departure of Gabriel Hammer-Webb.
As a side, they should have playoff ambitions after narrowly missing out last season. Rees-Zammit could provide that extra push to get them in the top eight.
It comes down to whether Cardiff could afford him. Should a Welsh homecoming happen, Cardiff seems the likeliest destination.
The odds say it all: Scarlets and Ospreys at 25/1, Dragons even further adrift at 33/1. The Arms Park was bouncing last year, and be fantastic to see Rees-Zammit there next year.
You have to give props to Rees-Zammit for taking a chance on his NFL dream. The boots are laced, the stage is set. All that’s left is to find the right home for his next chapter.
