Isak alternative? Liverpool 'view' Premier League-proven forward as summer target

Liverpool are reportedly considering their options in the event that they are unable to sign Newcastle United forward Alexander Isak.

With Darwin Nunez having left for the Saudi Pro League, the Premier League champions are expected to add to their attacking contingent before the end of the summer transfer window.

They are known to hold an interest in signing Isak, who is training away from the first-team squad at Newcastle having expressed a desire to leave St James' Park.

While a British-transfer-record offer could be made for the Sweden international, it remains to be seen whether the Magpies will soften their stance over a sale.

As such, Liverpool are left to contemplate whether they should up their previous offer for Isak or move for an alternative player for the final third.

Liverpool identify Isak alternative?

According to CaughtOffside, Liverpool are among the Premier League teams who are interested in signing Brentford attacker Yoane Wissa.

Like with Isak, Wissa has also indicated that he wishes to leave his current club in order to pursue a transfer elsewhere, coincidentally Newcastle if reports are to be believed.

However, Brentford are also playing hardball with regards to a fee, even with Wissa having less than 12 months remaining on his contract.

The report suggests that Liverpool are open to making their own approach for the 28-year-old, although it remains to be seen whether they would be prepared to pay Brentford's alleged valuation of £50m.

That is despite the DR Congo international netting 19 times in last season's Premier League and contributed 45 goals and 13 assists from 137 outings in the competition.

Tottenham Hotspur have also been credited as admirers of Wissa due to having former Brentford head coach Thomas Frank in their dugout, but it appears that they have now moved for a Manchester City star instead.

Lightning striking twice for Newcastle?

Newcastle were far down the line for signing Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt earlier in the summer before Liverpool became involved.

There is scope for lightning striking twice should Newcastle not give the green light to allowing Isak to move to Anfield.

Even with Champions League football secured for 2025-26, Newcastle continue to appear to be in a weak position in the market having been consistently gazumped by other clubs or turned down by targets.

Eddie Howe may instruct club officials to go all out for Wissa in order to ensure that they have a senior number nine available as soon as possible. As it stands, William Osula is in line to be viewed as the most senior number nine ahead of Newcastle facing Aston Villa on Saturday.
