"The problem is, he's handled it so badly. He couldn't have handled it any worse."

The verdict of former [Newcastle United](https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/all-about/newcastle-united-fc) boss Alan Pardew will likely be shared by the majority of the St James' Park faithful. Alexander Isak has, indeed, managed this saga terribly.

Just a few short months ago, the Swede stood aloft an open top bus heading through the city centre streets as arguably the most adored of all the talent in Eddie Howe's playing squad.

After his Wembley heroics and Premier League consistency, his stock could hardly have been higher as he spoke of seeing a future on Tyneside.

"I have said many times I am happy here and we are competing for titles, which is what you want as a football player," Isak said back in March.

Fast forward to present day and United’s club-record signing is a pariah. Animated supporters see no way back for him.

His conduct in going AWOL from the club's Far East could initially, possibly be explained away due to a thigh issue but now Howe has confirmed the player is fully fit, with no injury concerns plaguing him, outside opinion looks to have fully turned.

Isak has painted himself into a corner. What happens if Liverpool do not return with an improved offer? What happens if they do and Newcastle reject it?

Howe may be willing to welcome the striker back into the fold but, as of yet, the player has shown little sign he wants to continue his journey in the north east.

Even if the most unlikely situation unfolds, and Isak returns to normal duty, the vast majority of supporters will make their feelings clear.

It feels like the 25-year-old and his agents have played their hand terribly, boxed themselves into a corner and now have all their hopes hanging on a late Liverpool swoop.

Howe, however, is not ready to close the door on the forward just yet. "I think everything is in play," he said on Saturday.

"I've said many times he is contracted to us. He is our player. The club make the decision on his future."

The club have so far shown no desire to cash in. An improved offer could change that stance, potentially, but it will take an almighty jump from the Liverpool end to match United's valuation.

As such, Isak is left in limbo. Cast out on his own, holding out for a lifeline that may not arrive. His time at Newcastle surely tainted no matter what happens next.
