Crystal Palace have lost their appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport against their demotion from the Europa League and will play in the Conference League this season. The news comes just a day after Palace beat Liverpool on penalties to win the Community Shield at Wembley.
The FA Cup winners were demoted to the Conference League by UEFA on July 11 after it determined that as of March 1, John Textor had control or influence at both Palace and Lyon. The Selhurst Park club were placed in the Conference League by UEFA last month, as the French club were allowed to keep their place as they had finished higher in their respective leagues.
However, Palace last month submitted an appeal to CAS against UEFA but were informed this morning that they had lost their appeal.
A CAS media release read: “The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has dismissed an appeal by Crystal Palace FC (CPFC) against UEFA, Nottingham Forest FC and Olympique Lyonnais (OL) concerning a decision by UEFA to remove CPFC from the UEFA Europa League 2025/2026 due to a breach of UEFA multi-club ownership regulations.
“As a result, CPFC will be admitted to compete in the UEFA Conference League 2025/2026.
“The appeal sought to annul the decision by the UEFA Club Financial Control Body on 11 July 2025 which found CPFC and OL non-compliant with multi-club ownership regulations.
“Alongside the annulment of the decision, CPFC requested readmission to the UEFA Europa League with Nottingham Forest or OL’s admission rejected.
“After considering the evidence, the panel found that John Textor, founder of Eagle Football Holdings, had shares in CPFC and OL and was a board member with decisive influence over both clubs at the time of UEFA’s assessment date.
“The panel also dismissed the argument by CPFC that they received unfair treatment in comparison to Nottingham Forest and OL. The panel considered that the UEFA regulations are clear and do not provide flexibility to clubs that are non-compliant on the assessment date, as CPFC claimed.
“This was an expedited procedure, with an operative decision rendered two-and-a-half weeks after the appeal, filed on 21 July 2025. Unless parties request confidentiality, a full award (with grounds) will be made available on the CAS website in due course.”
Liverpool have also been linked with a move for Marc Guehi in recent weeks.
The centre-back is inside the final 12 months of his deal at Selhurst Park and the ECHO understands that he has admirers at Anfield.
Speaking after the Community Shield, Palace chairman Steve Parish admitted Guehi could leave the club this month.
He said: “Yes, of course, for players of that calibre to leave on a free, it is a problem for a football club.
“There is no doubt about it, unfortunately. Joachim (Anderson) went (last summer to Fulham) and we couldn’t afford to lose both of them.
"We then had another bid in January but that was a difficult situation as well. We will just have to see what happens. It needs a new contract or a conclusion of some kind.
“In the end, people trade players. That is what football clubs do. Of course, if you don’t care about tomorrow ever and put it all off, then we are a fantastic team.
“If we had four more players, I don’t know what we could achieve. Unfortunately, it is not always as simple as that. We have got a lot of outgoings this year because we are paying a lot of transfer fees for players that we have already got."
Parish added: "If you see the fees, they are just nuts. The money we are paying, crazy. We will have to see. We will do whatever we can. We won’t stop working. But as far as people being here or not being here, it depends.
"If it is the right decision for the football club and for them, there will be changes. But we have got to make smart ones.”
