Joe Milton has ‘funny bone moment,’ gives himself harsh grade in Cowboys debut

Joe Milton’s Dallas Cowboys tenure got off to a bumpy start.

The former New England Patriots quarterback was pulled from the game as an injury precaution and was pretty tough on himself for his performance.

“If I was grading myself, definitely a D, probably a D- if I’m being hard on myself,” he said after the game.

Milton got the start for Dallas in their preseason-opening loss to the Los Angeles Rams. He was rough out of the gate, starting out with a pair of three-and-out drives. Overall, he wasn’t particularly efficient through the air, finishing 17-of-29 passing for 143 yards, 1 touchdown and 1 interception.

Milton said he started to smooth things out as the game progressed. However, he notes that he needs to do a better job of starting games.

“Second, quarter on. I felt great. The guys around me did a great job as far as just understanding the plays, understanding what we wanted personnel-wise, scheme-wise, no matter what. I think I need to calm down faster so I can start rolling in the first quarter.”

Milton’s night ended earlier than expected when he hit his elbow on a throw.

“I think one of their players hit my elbow,” Milton said after the game. “It was probably one of my funny bone moments. I don’t know, to be honest, but I’d be good,” Milton said.

After the game, Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer said early tests were positive and that he believed it was just a bruise for Milton. The quarterback wanted to re-enter the game, but Schottenheimer decided to play it safe – it being the preseason and all.

A sixth-round pick in 2024, Milton spent his rookie season as a backup behind Drake Maye in New England.

Milton played almost the entire Week 18 win against the Buffalo Bills. That, combined with some splashes from the preseason, sparked some hype around Milton’s potential.

However, the Patriots opted to move on from the big-armed quarterback, sending him and a seventh-round pick to Dallas in exchange for a fifth-round pick.
