Guardiola has already provided perfect Savinho Tottenham answer after Son exit

Thomas Frank may be in line to get an attacking upgrade ahead of the new season with Savinho a potential Tottenham incoming. A huge year for the club after finishing 17th in the Premier League table last term, Spurs have been active in the transfer market but many have pointed out they have not done enough.

As well as a lack of signings, Spurs have lost James Maddison to a long-term injury and Son Heung-min has ended his ten years at the club to joins MLS side LAFC. Tottenham have work to do to bring their playing squad up to the required level and Manchester City ace Savinho could be in line to add some more quality in the final third.

Spurs are in talks with City over a deal for the 21-year-old, with Manchester Evening News reporting that a fee in excess of £50million is required for Pep Guardiola's team to even consider a transfer. Savinho would give Tottenham choice due to his ability to play on either flank and also as an attacking midfielder, thus potentially providing an answer on the left flank following Son's departure.

But what exactly would he bring to the team? football.london has taken a look back at what those connected with Manchester City had to say about the ex-Girona man during his debut season at the Etihad Stadium.

Pep Guardiola after Savinho's performance in last season's Community Shield

"[He had a] good impact. He can play on both sides. On the left, he has incredible quality and can attack the byline. After that he is really good at the crosses," outlined the Spaniard. "He will help Erling [Haaland] to score goals. Look at the goal we scored, byline and cross. When you have ability to arrive in those positions and make a good cross, but not just inside, he was aggressive.

"With our wingers, I ask them when you have a good feeling, attack the opponent, it doesn’t matter if you dribble or not, you have to do it, it’s your quality. It doesn’t matter if you aren’t effective but you have to do it. He did it really well for the 35 minutes he played."

Guardiola praise after win at Leicester

“We’re a way from what we have to be as a team, but Savinho made an incredible performance again like he did against Everton. He’s a guy who can play on both sides, today he finally scored a goal," said Guardiola.

"He has an incredible ability and quality he’s proven in that period. He arrived in the six months when the team isn’t in the best moment than maybe he expected, compared with the past.

“He makes one action fine, second fine, third miss it, four mistake, five mistake, the sixth try again and try again and try again. And until the end he tries.

“Defensively he’s not incredible in the one v one, but his work rate is impressive and he’s so aggressive on both sides.

“He’s had a lot of chances but the moment you score one or two, you’ll score a lot. I’m really pleased for him for the game, the goal, the assist for Erling. On the left he can make those crosses, the game he played was really good.”

Micah Richards on Savinho after his three assists in 4-1 win over West Ham

"I really liked him on this left-hand side," said the former Manchester City player. "Normally we have seen him play on the right-hand side in a sort of inverted position. He can really hold his width well.

"He just has that confidence. For someone who is only 20 years old, you expect his form is going to be inconsistent at times, but against West Ham everything really worked for him.

"He gets a little bit lucky at times, but you have got to be in the right areas and that is exactly what he did throughout the game. We have seen City's wingers in the past sort of stuttering, but it was nice to see his energy and his confidence.

"His early crosses are what Erling Haaland has been yearning for, so that he can go into the back post and wait for a wonderful delivery.

"At times, we saw him coming into that number 10 position as well. He has a lovely weighted ball but he is not just happy with that, he also wants to get into the box and make a difference."

Kevin De Bruyne after Savinho's performance against West Ham

''The talent is really there. He started really well and it went a bit down with the whole team. It’s normal for a guy of his age, but he’s got exceptional quality so it’s good he gets confidence and makes a difference," explained the Belgian.

''I think he had a lot of moments where he did really well, I think he started the season really well and then obviously, with us doing a little bit less, it was hard I think on him, you know, for a young player.

"Lately, it seems like he found a bit of confidence again and obviously, he’s scoring, last week, and helped and today, he had a really good performance so happy for him.''

Erling Haaland on Savinho after two assists vs Ipswich Town

“He’s been really good," confessed the prolific striker. "Of course he has to learn English but his football skills, everyone can see it. So it’s about keep on improving, because to play to together and everything.

“But you can already see the qualities he has. He got a penalty and an assist today. He’s going to be really good for us.”
