Why Manchester United's Diogo Dalot refused to sign fan's memorabilia in viral video

Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot has gone viral after footage was captured of him refusing to sign a piece of a fan's memorabilia outside Old Trafford. The Red Devils made their return to the Theatre of Dreams last weekend as they hosted David de Gea's Fiorentina in their final pre-season fixture.

Fans gathered in their masses to watch the likes of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and get a glimpse of new signing Benjamin Sesko as they welcomed the players back ahead of the start of the 2025/26 campaign. However, Dalot, who was recently included as part of Ruben Amorim's new leadership group, was seen snubbing one fan in particular while signing autographs pre-match, but the reason why has now been revealed.

In the footage that has gone viral, the Portuguese full-back can be seen interacting with fans and signing shirts and pictures. However, he noticably goes to sign something for one fan before skipping right past them instead.

In the video, it appears that the fan is holding a print of Dalot's new shirt number - number two. This is often a ploy done by those who a trying to sell signed replica shirts on mass, as they will gain the players signature onto the number and then have it printed in mass on the back of shirts they have brought in order to make profit. In some instances, they will charge hundreds, if not thousands of pounds.

Dalot is clearly aware of this scheme though, hence why he refused to sign the number being held towards him.

The reaction to this online has been varied, with some praising the former AC Milan loanee for his actions, with one commenting: "Well done Dalot, all these sellers are getting out of hand." Another responded: "They stopped signing numbers a long time ago because they end up being resold by hawks. He was signing everything else though."

However, there were also some negative comments too, with money commenting on what Dalot earns as he refuses to help someone else, rightly or wrongly, earn a living.

"I get why, but footballers earn silly amounts to kick a ball about and won't help other people hustle is a bit sad icl. They really don't get how privileged they are," said one supporter, while a second added: "100k a week and won't help someone earn a few hundred quid."
