Newcastle United have less than a week to complete any transfer business before their Premier League opener against Aston Villa. It's been a tough window for Eddie Howe and the Magpies, with the ongoing Alexander Isak transfer saga an unwelcome distraction.

His absence from the first-team means Newcastle risk heading into the first game of the season with Will Osula the only striker available to Howe. The Toon head coach has tinkered with his side in pre-season, with Anthony Gordon leading the line, though he picked up a knock in the final friendly of the warm up campaign.

Aaron Ramsdale and Anthony Elanga have bolstered Howe's ranks in between the sticks and out on the right-hand side of the pitch, though there's still more work to be done.

With that in mind, ChronicleLive has taken a look at the transfers Newcastle United could complete before the Premier League curtain raiser.

First things first, signing a centre-back is a must and the Magpies have agreed a deal with AC Milan to sign Malick Thiaw. The German defender is at Newcastle's training base to complete a medical and that's the first signing they can get over the line before the Premier League opener.

The next incoming signing has to be a striker. Although Osula is highly rated, he's not at the level of Isak and that's left a huge void up front. Porto striker Samu Aghehowa is admried by the Magpies, but his asking price, said to be in the region of £80million, looks set to be too much for the Toon.

Newcastle will be hoping there's a breakthrough in talks with Brentford for Yoane Wissa this week and he'll be a vital addition to the front line. However, the Magpies still need another goalscorer if they want to compete on all fronts.

Nicolas Jackson is another who has been linked with a move to St. James' Park and reports claim the striker has made Newcastle his first choice. It remains to be seen if the Senegalese striker will move to the North East, but he's apparently made it clear he wants to leave Chelsea.

He may not be the first name on Newcastle fans' transfer wishlist, but he's got plenty of Premier League experience and has scored goals in the top flight. You'd back Howe to improve him if he were to make the move to the Magpies.

Howe's side know they could also do with another option in the heart of midfield given the injury to Joe Willock, though that's not as bad as first feared. Lewis Miley looked impressive in the Sela Cup, but with just four fit midfielders, Newcastle need more options in their engine room.

One departure the Magpies can sanction before the start of the season, is goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos. The Greek shot stopper is closing in on a loan move to Sevilla and is set for a medical in the coming days.
