Goals — or the lack of them — were Manchester United’s Achilles’ heel last season.

Rasmus Højlund, tipped to be the club’s long-term No.9, endured a torrid Premier League campaign, scoring just four goals. Now, with AC Milan emerging as frontrunners for his signature this summer, it’s clear United are entering a new attacking chapter under Ruben Amorim.

That chapter began with the blockbuster arrival of Benjamin Šeško from RB Leipzig.

The Slovenian’s youth, flair, and unpredictability have already got fans dreaming, but Amorim knows one striker — no matter how talented — can’t carry the load alone. Competing in the league and various cups demands depth, variety, and proven firepower.

And that’s where the latest link comes in.

According to Caught Offside, United are exploring a deal for Dominic Calvert-Lewin as a squad rotation and impact option. The 27-year-old, now a free agent after leaving Everton, offers Premier League experience in spades — and crucially, he wouldn’t cost a transfer fee.

They’re not alone in the chase: Newcastle have already held talks but reportedly balked at his wage demands, while West Ham and Sunderland are keeping tabs.

Calvert-Lewin’s career has been a story of peaks and troughs. Once hailed as “fantastic” by Carlo Ancelotti, his form has nosedived in recent years, with just 17 Premier League goals across the last four seasons — three of them coming in 2024/25. Injuries and an apparent £100,000-per-week wage expectation have made some clubs cautious.

But the upside is clear. Back in 2020/21, Calvert-Lewin hit 21 goals in all competitions, blending aerial dominance, hold-up play, and ruthless finishing. If Amorim can coax even a fraction of that player back, United could have a perfect foil for Šeško — someone who can bully defenders, change the tempo, and give the attack a more physical edge.

It’s a gamble. But with Højlund on the way out and Amorim needing all the weapons he can get, it might be one worth taking.
