Liverpool could hit a London club with a pursuit of their star striker

The striker merry-go-round has been one of this summer’s major talking points around the Premier League, as several of the division’s biggest clubs compete for a new forward capable of winning them the biggest prizes.

Arsenal eventually signed Viktor Gyokeres after a transfer saga with Sporting CP, while Manchester United recently won the race for Benjamin Sesko in another of the summer’s biggest stories. But arguably the biggest of all is still yet to be resolved, as Liverpool seek to sign £150million-valued Alexander Isak from Newcastle United.

Such has the Magpies’ summer been as several targets have slipped through their fingers, that they may refuse to let their prized asset leave. This would leave Liverpool in need of another striking option after the recent sales of Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz. Other Premier League options may come onto their radar, with one high-scoring forward reported as a potential target for the Reds.

Liverpool could target move for Brentford’s Yoane Wissa

Newcastle have been touted as the favourites for the 28-year-old’s signature, but Liverpool could yet arrive on the scene and take him from under their noses, as reported by Caught Offside - in what would be a surprising turn of events to compound a worrying summer for both Newcastle and Brentford. The Reds view him as a capable alternative to Isak with a proven goalscoring record.

The Bees evidently want to keep Wissa, who is the club’s all-time top Premier League goalscorer with 45 goals and struck 19 in the league last season, but the player wants out and could be allowed to leave if a reported £50m valuation is met. The DR Congo international recently returned to Brentford training but his stance on leaving has not changed, the report continues.

How could Brentford cope without Yoane Wissa?

Having already lost Bryan Mbeumo to Man United, the sale of Wissa would deepen a worrying situation surrounding Brentford this summer. While the departure of Mbeumo was expected, the belief was that the Bees would not let both of their star strikers leave in the same window. Interestingly, Wissa and his entourage waited until Mbeumo had agreed to depart before it was made public that the club had reportedly granted him permission last summer that he could leave in this window.

While losing Wissa and Mbeumo could make the Bees a combined £121m, they are left with little of the window left in which to spend that money. With the additional key departures of Thomas Frank, Christian Norgaard and Mark Flekken, it has been a major summer of change at the club.

Increased pressure could be placed on the shoulders of last summer’s marquee signing Igor Thiago, who arrived for £30m but made just eight substitute appearances due to injury. The Bees have also reportedly held talks with Bournemouth forward Dango Ouattara in what would be a surprise signing from a Premier League rival.
